Natural grass also includes hybrid surfaces like DD Grassmaster, which are enhanced with synthetic fibers but are still mostly made of natural grass.
Artificial turf (1st generation) includes AstroTurf and other "carpet on concrete" surfaces like TartanTurf, SuperTurf, and Texas Turf.
Artificial turf (2nd generation) includes FieldTurf, AstroTurf GameDay Grass, Momentum Turf, and other surfaces that use fibers and rubber to simulate grass.
Games played in stadiums with retractable roofs are recorded as Indoor if the roof was closed and Outdoor if the roof was open.
During their two seasons as an AFL team, the Cincinnati Bengals played their home games at Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. Nippert Stadium remains the home field of the UC Bearcats, as it has been since 1902.
In 1970, the construction of Riverfront Stadium was completed on the bank of the Ohio River. The Cincinnati Reds of the National League shared the multipurpose facility with the Bengals for three decades. The stadium was renamed Cinergy Field in 1996. The playing surface was unforgiving AstroTurf for the Bengals' entire stay at Riverfront; natural grass was installed only after the Bengals played their final game there in 1999.
In 2000, the Cincinnati Bengals moved into a stadium of their own. In an uncharacteristic move for NFL owners, Mike Brown chose not to sell naming rights for the new stadium, instead naming it Paul Brown Stadium after his father, the Bengals' founder and first head coach. The surface at Paul Brown Stadium was originally Kentucky bluegrass, but it proved difficult to keep the field in good condition, so FieldTurf was installed in 2004.
